INTERNATIONAL FUND FOR AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT (IFAD) – UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (UNDP) THROUGH TAMIL NADU CORPORATION FOR DEVELOPMENT OF WOMEN LTD (TNCDWL) This is a Nationwide Programme launched by the IFAD – UNDP through Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women Ltd (TNCDWL) to support the Rural Women to organize themselves as SHGs and to usher in Socio and Economic development among them. Five Districts were selected for this programme like Dharmapuri, Salem, Madurai, Viluppuram and Ramnad. Separate District project officers and sub staff were appointed in all these Districts. Loan was distributed by the Nationalized Banks with Subsidy. The other development departments were also involved in the programme to select the beneficiaries to obtain loan and subsidy. The NGO’s were involved in the project to form SHGs and to select the beneficiaries. SOCIAL ACTION PROGRAMME – WOMEN EMPOWERMENT – OXFAM (INDIA) The rural poor women were initially identified and organized in to Self – Help Groups consisting not less than 20 women in a group. RIDO formed more than 6,750 Self – Help Groups (SHGs) in Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri Districts. Training was conducted for the members of the SHGs on various issues, especially creating awareness about social rights. The SHGs were formed into Federations at each block, Trainings on Savings, Micro credits, Governance and Entrepreneur development were conducted. Gradually the women released themselves from the clutches of money lenders and have become economically independent. The role of nationalized banks in these processes is highly appreciable. The women were able to send their children to schools. At many places the women contested and got elected in local panchayats as a Ward member, Councilors, Presidents and Union Chairman.
